UPDATE - Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down 2.2% at close

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index closed the day at 118,341.52 points on Monday, down 2.21% from the previous close.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day at 120,459.39 points. As of the daily close, it lost 2,673.62 points from last week's close of 121,015.14 points.

During the day, the index's lowest level was 116,647.79 points, and the highest was 121,189.73 points.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 818.65 billion Turkish liras ($136.95 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 14.8 billion Turkish liras (nearly $2.5 billion).

On the first transaction day of the week, 14 stocks on the index rose and 86 were down compared to Friday.

The highest trading volumes were posted by national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, petrochemical giant Petkim, and defense producer Aselsan.

Petrol company Turcas was the best performer, with its shares up 8.31%, while freezer producer Klimasan dropped the most, down 6.53%.

The price of one ounce of gold was around $1,572.20 by market close, up from $1,566 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $53.85 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) on Monday.
