UPDATE - Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down at close

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index was down 0.77% to 114,448.91 points at Wednesday's closing.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the midweek at 115,369.50 points. It dropped 889.94 points from Tuesday's close of 115,338.85 points.

During the day, the index hovered between 114,524.90 and 115,598.65 points.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 820 billion Turkish liras ($119 billion) by market close, with a record daily trading volume of 20.6 billion Turkish liras ($3 billion).

In the third transaction day of the week, 25 stocks on the index rose, 28 went down, and the remaining flat compared to Tuesday.

The highest trading volumes were posted by iron/steel producer Kardemir, private lender Garanti, and chemical giant Petkim.

Kardemir was the best performer, with its shares up 6.08%, while shares of wholesale trade company Bizim Magazalar did the worst, losing 5.41%.

The price of one ounce of gold was $1,771.55 by market close, down from $1,755.30 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $40.41 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) on Wednesday.
