UPDATE - Turkey's Borsa Istanbul down at midweek close

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index closed at 1,449.59 points on Wednesday, down 0.83% from the previous close.

Starting the day at 1,465.81 points, Borsa Istanbul’s BIST 100 index lost 12.1 points from Tuesday's close of 1,461.69 points.

During Wednesday's trading, the BIST 100 hovered between 1,448.48 points and 1,467.16 points. While 27 stocks on the index rose, 71 fell, and two remained flat compared to the previous close.

Closing the day with a market value of around 1.1 trillion Turkish liras ($130 billion), the benchmark index posted a daily trading volume of 14.3 billion liras ($1.7 billion).

Shares of private lenders Garanti BBVA and Yapi Kredi, and iron and steel producer Kardemir recorded the highest trading volumes.

Stocks of energy company Aksa Enerji climbed the most with an 4.35% hike, while shares of automotive manufacturer Karsan dropped the most, falling 3.57%.

One ounce of gold traded for $1,789.10 by market close, up from $1,792.00 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $69.34 per barrel as of 6.13 p.m. local time (1513GMT).
