UPDATE - Turkey’s Borsa Istanbul down at Tuesday close

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Tuesday at 1,420.59 points, down 1.49% from the previous day.

After starting the day at 1,442.88 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index lost 21.47 points from Monday's close of 1,442.06 points.

During the day, the index's lowest value was 1,419.66 points, while its daily high was 1,445.13 points.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 1.02 trillion Turkish liras ($123.9 billion) by market close, with a daily trading volume of 19.4 billion Turkish liras ($2.38 billion).

On the second transaction day of the week, 15 stocks on the index rose while 85 fell compared to Monday.

The highest trading volumes were posted by private lender Garanti BBVA, sports organization Fenerbahce, and fertilizer firm Gubretas.

Telecommunication giant Turkcell was the best performer, with its shares up 2.83%, while stocks of fertilizer producer Ege Gubre dropped the most, 5.33%.

The price of one ounce of gold was $1,736.70 by market close, up from $1,710 at the previous close, according to data from Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $63.90 per barrel as of 6.20 p.m. local time (1520GMT) on Tuesday.
