BIST 100 index falls 96.16 points from previous close, USD/TRY exchange rate stands around 5.76

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the week down 0.10% to close at 95,976.82 points on Friday.

After starting the day at 95,721.69 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 96.16 points from Thursday's close of 96,072.99 points.

On a weekly basis, the benchmark index posted a 2.84% decline, although it has surged around 8% from 88,865.01 points at the close on the first business day of 2019.

During Friday's trading, the BIST 100's daily low was 95,028.49 points while it peaked at 96,168.46 points -- 40 stocks on the index rose, 46 fell, and 14 were flat compared to the previous close.

The index closed the week with a market value of nearly 635 billion liras ($111 billion), and posted a daily trading volume of 4.55 billion Turkish liras ($786 million).

Friday's highest trading volumes were recorded by private lender Garanti Bankasi, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and state-run lender Halkbank.

By market capitalization, Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding, Garanti Bankasi, and iron and steel producer Eregli were the top listed companies.

Stocks of Parsan Makina (PARSN), operating in steel forging and machinery, were the top gainers -- up 8.47% -- and shares of conglomerate Verusa Holding (VERUS) did the worst, falling 5.29%.

One ounce of gold sold for $1,293 at the daily close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets versus the previous close of $1,301.

A barrel of Brent oil sold for $71.53 as of 6.30 p.m. local time (1530GMT) on Friday -- with a day range of $70.91 to $71.75.

At the beginning of 2019, the price of Brent oil was around $53 per barrel.
