BIST 100 index climbs 0.82 pct at daily close, rising over 750 points from previous close

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index closed Monday up 0.82 percent at 96,661.36 points with a total trading volume of around 8.4 billion Turkish liras ($1.8 billion).

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index ended the day with a 785.65-point hike from the previous close of 95,875.71 points, while it started the week at 95,922.27 points.

The benchmark index saw the lowest level at 93,396.54 points and the highest at 97,186.54 points, while 36 stocks on the index were on the rise, 53 fell, and 11 were flat compared to the previous close.

The total market value of listed shares on the BIST 100 was 617.8 billion Turkish liras ($137.2 billion) at the close, while the banking sector was flat with no percentage change, and the BIST holding index closed the day up 1.37 percent.

Among all sectors, the textile leather sector index fell the most with a 3.36 percent drop, and the BIST transportation index saw the best performance, going up 3.94 percent.

Shares of Soda Sanayii (SODA), part of Turkey's Sisecam, a top international glass manufacturer, were the top gainer -- rising 6.80 percent -- and stocks of supermarket chain Sok Marketler (SOKM) ended the day with the worst performance, falling 6.72 percent.

The BIST 100's most-traded listed companies were national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, major defense company Aselsan, private lender Garanti, iron and steel producer Kardemir, and Petkim, Turkey's largest petrochemicals producer.

On Monday, the USD/TRY exchange was 4.5090 as of 5 p.m. local time (1400GMT), versus 4.4910 at Friday's close.

The euro/lira exchange rate rose to 5.3230 by market close, up from 5.2830 at Friday's close, and one British pound traded for 6.0540 Turkish liras, while the GBP/TRY rate was 6.0280 at the previous close.

The BIST Gold Exchange index fell 0.09 percent at the close. In Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, one ounce of gold traded for $1,297.00 as of 4.30 p.m. local time (1330GMT) Monday, versus $1,298.20 at previous close.

As of 6.15 p.m. local time (1515GMT), the price of Brent oil stood at $76.25 per barrel -- hovering between $75.54 and $76.59 during the day -- while it was around $66 at the beginning of this year.
