UPDATE - Turkey's Borsa Istanbul up nearly 1% at close

BIST 100 earns over 900 points compared to last week's close; Turkish lira gains in value against foreign currencies

ISTANBUL (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index increased by 0.96% to close Tuesday at 98,028.49 points.

Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index started the day at 97,860.40 points. As of closing, it gained 930.15 points from Friday's close of 97,098.34 points.

Borsa Istanbul was closed for transactions on Monday due to July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day.

The benchmark index hovered between 97,633.85 and 98,753.33 points during Tuesday's trading.

The total market value of the BIST 100 was around 653.3 billion Turkish liras ($114.8 billion) by market close, and the daily trading volume was 5.8 billion Turkish liras ($1 billion).

On the first transaction day of the week, 73 stocks on the index rose, 19 were down, and eight were flat compared to the previous close.

The top-listed companies by market value were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding and private lenders Garanti and Akbank.

The highest trading volumes were posted by Garanti, national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and Akbank.

The day's best performer was private lender ICBC Turkey Bank, with its shares up 7.90%, while stocks of energy and investment company Isiklar dropped most, down 2.86%.

The price of one ounce of gold was around $1,412.90 by market close, up from $1,406.00 at the previous close, according to Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets data.

The price of Brent crude oil was around $66.85 per barrel as of 6 p.m. (1500GMT) Tuesday.
