UPDATES WITH MORE INFORMATION ON TERRORIST

ANKARA (AA - Turkish intelligence "neutralized" a senior PKK operative in northern Syria, security sources said on Monday.

Mehmet Akyol, code name Dogan Atmac, said to be in charge of YPG/PKK terror group’s operations in the Ayn Issa region, was targeted in an operation by Türkiye’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT), said the sources, requesting anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

According to the sources, Akyol was wanted for his involvement in terrorist activities and attacks against security forces in the eastern Van province and southern Hatay province of Türkiye and was operating in northern Iraq before recently taking over the PKK terror group's operations in Ayn Issa, where he was targeted by MIT.

Turkish authorities use the term "neutralize" to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. The YPG is PKK's Syrian offshoot.
