UPDATE - Turkish stocks down at midweek close

BIST 100 index loses 5,523.44 points, USD/TRY exchange rate stands around 5.40

ANKARA (AA) - Turkey's benchmark stock index ended the midweek trading down 5.67 percent to close at 91,855.14 points on Wednesday.

After starting the day at 97,820.68 points, Borsa Istanbul's BIST 100 index fell 5,523.44 points from the previous close.

During the midweek trading, the BIST 100's daily low was 90,523.89 points and it peaked at 97,998.39 points -- one stock on the index rose, 98 fell, and another one was flat compared to the previous close.

The index posted a daily trading volume of 11.13 billion Turkish liras ($2.08 billion), closing Wednesday with a market value of nearly 604 billion Turkish liras ($110 billion).

The highest trading volumes were seen in stocks of private lender Garanti Bankasi, Turkey's national flag carrier Turkish Airlines, and lender Akbank.

By market capitalization, the leading companies of the BIST 100 were Turkish conglomerate Koc Holding, energy giant Tupras, and Garanti Bankasi.

Stocks of conglomerate Verusa Holding were the only gainer on Wednesday, up 0.93 percent, as shares of IT company Indeks Bilgisayar Sistemleri fell the most with 10.68 percent drop.

One ounce of gold was sold for $1,318.30 at the daily close in Borsa Istanbul's Precious Metals and Diamond Markets, versus $1,316.00 at the close on Tuesday.

With a day range of $67.11 to $67.71, the price of Brent oil was around $67.50 per barrel as of 6 p.m. local time (1500GMT) on Wednesday.

At the beginning of 2019, the price of Brent oil was around $53 per barrel.
