Airstrikes pound terrorists in Zap region, says Turkey's National Defense Ministry

MORE REMARKS BY DEFENSE MINISTRY OFFICIAL; ADDS BACKGROUND ON FETO AND DEFEATED 2016 COUP

ANKARA (AA) - Turkish fighter jets hit 14 PKK terrorists in northern Iraq, an official from the Turkish National Defense Ministry said on Monday.

An air operation in the Zap region late Sunday neutralized terrorists who were hiding out in a cave, Col. Tamer Zincir told reporters in the capital Ankara.

Turkish authorities often use the word "neutralized" in their statements to imply that the terrorists in question either surrendered or were killed or captured.

A total of 154 terrorists have been neutralized since April 4 in operations against PKK terrorists in both Turkey and northern Iraq, Zincir said.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist group by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including many women and children.

Earlier in April, four Turkish soldiers were martyred and six others injured during operations against terrorists along the Turkish-Iraqi border area. PKK terrorists have often used bases in northern Iraq to launch attacks.

Zincir also said some 16,540 personnel have been dismissed from the Turkish Armed Forces since the 2016 defeated coup committed by the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), while 6,154 personnel are still being investigated for FETO ties.

Using rogue military officers, FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.
