LONDON (AA) - A man was detained following an incident involving a car and pedestrians in central London Saturday, according to police.

London Metropolitan Police said a "collision" caused several injuries, amid local reports that a car ploughed into a group of people near the Natural History Museum.

London Ambulance Services said 11 people who sustained head and leg injuries were treated after the incident, with nine of them being hospitalized.

"Police were called at 1421 on Saturday, 7 October to reports of a collision in Exhibition Road, South Kensington," a statement by Scotland Yard said.

However, an update from the force said the incident was now being treated as "a road traffic collision".

Police said "a man has been arrested at the scene."

Meanwhile, government sources said Prime Minister Theresa May receives regular updates regarding the incident.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also said an investigation is underway.

The terror threat level in the country is "severe", which means a terror attack is highly likely.

In five separate terror attacks, 36 people have been killed in the U.K. this year. Terrorists used vehicles in Westminster Bridge, London Bridge and Finsbury Park Mosque attacks.
