LONDON (AA) – An engineer died when an aircraft belonging to the Red Arrows, the British Royal Air Forces’ aerobatics team, crashed Tuesday afternoon in North Wales, the British Royal Air Force (RAF) confirmed.

An RAF statement said the aircraft's pilot survived and is now receiving hospital care.

Eyewitnesses earlier said that only one person ejected from the aircraft before the crash.

“We were called shortly before 1.30 pm this afternoon (Tuesday 20 March 2018) to report an aircraft had crashed at RAF Valley in Holyhead,” the Welsh Ambulance Service said after the crash.

A Defence Ministry statement said a Hawk aircraft used by the Red Arrows had crashed.

“We are aware of an incident today at RAF Valley involving a Hawk aircraft. We are investigating the incident,” it said on Twitter.

A separate statement from the RAF appealed for any footage from eyewitnesses.

Wales' RAF Valley is a base used to train fighter pilots, with about 1,500 people working.
