Five officers wounded by gunman, who was killed in shootout with police

WASHINGTON (AA) – Five people were killed Friday when a gunman opened fire at a manufacturing company in Aurora, Illinois.

Police responded to reports of an active shooter at Henry Pratt Co.

They searched through the 29,000-square-foot building until they located the gunman. A shootout ensued and they ended up killing him.

He was later identified as Gary Martin, 45, who is believed to be an employee at the manufacturing facility, according to Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman.

Five police officers were also injured and have been transported to nearby hospitals.

"Thank you for your selfless act. Thank you for running toward the gunfire and putting your lives in danger to protect those inside the business," Ziman said about the injured officers at a news conference.

The shooter’s motive has not yet been determined.

"It is a shame that mass shootings such as this have become commonplace in our country," Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin said at a news conference.
