US envoy, Qatari FM discuss Gaza situation in Doha

Two men discuss current situation in Palestine, along with ‘issues of common concern’

DOHA (AA) - Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Wednesday discussed the situation in the blockaded Gaza Strip with U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Jason Greenblatt.

Greenblatt is currently on a visit to Qatar, the duration of which has not been made public.

The official Qatari News Agency (QNA) said the meeting had tackled “the current situation in Palestine, along with other issues of common concern”.

During the meeting, the Qatari FM reportedly reaffirmed Doha’s “firm stance in support of the Palestinian cause… based on past UN resolutions and the notion of a two-state solution”.

"Met today in Doha, Qatar with Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Al Thani,” Greenblatt tweeted.

“We discussed the urgent need for humanitarian relief for Gaza & the Trump Administration’s developing peace plan,” he added.

Greenblatt's visit to Doha comes two days after the U.S. relocated its embassy to Jerusalem amid ongoing Palestinian protests in the Gaza Strip.

On Monday, at least 62 Palestinian demonstrators were martyred and hundreds more injured by Israeli troops deployed near the Israel-Gaza fence.

Monday’s demonstration had coincided with Israel’s 70th anniversary -- an event Palestinians refer to as “The Catastrophe” -- and the relocation of the embassy to Jerusalem, which took place the same day.

Since the Gaza rallies first began on March 30, more than 100 Palestinian demonstrators have been martyred by Israeli army gunfire.
