US House Speaker McCarthy meets British prime minister

WASHINGTON (AA) - US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday hosted British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who is in Washington, D.C. to meet President Joe Biden at the White House.

“Our two nations have such long history and such a great combination of not just our beliefs and our freedoms, but our economics,” said McCarthy during his meeting with Sunak.

“And I want to find every way we can to continue to build on all of this, because I think when our bond is stronger, the world is safer and democracy grows more," he added.

Sunak, for his part, said the UK and the US should use their "strong relationship" to deal with future challenges.

During his visit to Congress, Sunak also held meetings with both Democratic and Republican Senate leaders, further strengthening his engagement with key representatives from both sides of the aisle.

On Thursday, he is expected to discuss the war in Ukraine and economic and defense cooperation with Biden.
