Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully a ‘national treasure’, California lawmaker says

By Michael Hernandez

WASHINGTON (AA) – A trio of lawmakers have introduced legislation to honor long-time Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully whose voice has become synonymous with the storied franchise for generations of fans.

Scully has called more than 9,000 Dodger games in his 67 years Los Angeles by way of the team that began in Brooklyn.

“Vin Scully is a national treasure,” said high-ranking California lawmaker Barbara Boxer. Alongside Boxer, Sen. Diane Feinstein and Rep. Xavier Becerra, all California Democrats, introduced the legislation Wednesday.

Becerra’s home district includes Dodger Stadium, the third oldest stadium in the league behind Chicago’s Wrigley Field and Boston’s Fenway Park.

The bill says it “honors the life and legendary career of Vincent Edward “Vin” Scully, whose character, artistry, and storytelling as an announcer for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers has set the standard for sports announcing.”

The Dodgers have an established record of breaking barriers. They are the team of Jackie Robinson, the first black player to don a major league uniform, Japan’s Hideo Nomo and Mexico’s Fernando Valenzuela.

The Dodgers notched six World Series titles dating to 1955.

Throughout it all, it has been Scully’s voice that has been the window into the balls and strikes, the singles and doubles and, the occasional homerun -- all peppered with his countless insights into the players and the game.

Scully will call his last game Sunday against the Dodgers’ principal rival, the San Francisco Giants, at AT&T Park, ending an era for the team and its fans.

“Although I’ve been a Giants fan for nearly 60 years, it’s impossible not to have great admiration and affection for Vin Scully,” Feinstein said. “Vin really is the heart and soul of the Dodgers -- and of Los Angeles.”
