US media shocked by Trump's victory

Majority of the media that endorsed Clinton, express disappointment with election result

By Esra Kaymak Avci

WASHINGTON (AA) - The U.S. mainstream media largely described the election of President-elect Donald Trump as a "surprise outcome."

The New York Times, which had endorsed Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton, used the headline "Donald Trump Is Elected President in Stunning Repudiation of the Establishment".

Saying the result was unexpected, the paper harshly criticized Trump and said he led an "explosive, populist and polarizing campaign that took relentless aim at the institutions and long-held ideals of American democracy".

It also added that Trump's discriminative and provocative campaign targeted American democracy and institutions, and that his policies ranging from health care to immigration has shown Trump "to be temperamentally unfit to lead a diverse nation of 320 million people".

According to the Washington Post, which used the headline "Donald Trump wins the presidency in stunning upset over Clinton," said that the voters carried Trump to victory as they were "fed up with the political system and mistrustful of Clinton.”

The Wall Street Journal headline read: "Donald Trump Clinches Presidency After Key Battleground Wins”. It said the real estate mogul will be the first person to enter the White House "without any prior political experience or military service".

It also added that Trump's win threatened to shake U.S. markets and "drove the Mexican peso down sharply in overnight trading".

Meanwhile, CNN used the headline "Triumph and heartbreak" and said his victory was "one of the most stunning upsets in American political history".

It added that Trump's defeat of Clinton was shocking and changed the traditional wisdom on how campaigns operate, how America's demographics changes and how a "controversial nominee can affect down-ballot candidates."

On the other hand, Republican Party sympathizer, Fox News, used the headline "Stunner: Donald Trump Wins Presidency, Defeats Hillary Clinton in Historic Upset."

According to the media outlet, Trump’s victory also led the Republicans to project more from the next presidency in the leadership of Trump as the party holds the majority in the House and Senate.

Trump will take the oath of office Jan. 20 as the 45th President of the United States.
