US midwest, south brace for more severe weather

Tornadoes, flooding expected in parts of south still recovering from a weekend battering

By Michael Hernandez

WASHINGTON (AA) - Parts of the southern and midwestern U.S. are bracing for more severe weather on Monday after being battered by a succession of devastating winds, tornadoes and rains over the weekend.

More than a dozen people were killed and dozens more injured as extreme weather, including at least four tornadoes, swept across the midwest and south as storms swept across Oklahoma and eastern Texas all the way through Ohio.

The National Weather Service warned Monday of an "enhanced risk" of severe storms in the mid-Atlantic as it registered "record flooding" in Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

"Flood and severe threats move eastward today, but dangerous flood conditions remain in the Central US," the service wrote on Twitter.

Speaking during a news conference, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said the damage to his state is devastating.

"Today is a difficult day for the people of Canton and the surrounding region," he said of one of the cities hardest hit by the extreme weather. "In response to the devastation, I'm confident Texans will come together to rebuild and help their neighbors in need."
