US: NJ train traveling twice speed limit before crash

Train traveling 21 mph as it crashed into Hoboken station, killing 1 person

NEW YORK (AA) – A New Jersey Transit train that caused a deadly crash was traveling at twice the speed limit at the time of impact, an official statement said Thursday.

The train began accelerating 38 seconds before the crash from an initial legal speed of 8 miles per hour (12.8 kilometers per hour), according to two event recorders that were installed on the train, the National Transportation Safety Board said. The speed limit is 10 mph.

The commuter train’s engineer, who was injured in the crash, pulled the brakes one second before impact, the statement added.

New Jersey Transit announced Wednesday it would immediately implement a new safety rule to prevent repeat accidents.

The rule dictates that the conductor join the engineer whenever a train attempts to enter the Hoboken Terminal or Atlantic City station, offering a second pair of eyes.

The Sept. 21 crash at the Hoboken station during the morning rush hour killed a young mother and injured more than 100 victims at one of the busiest commuter train stations between New Jersey and New York.

The NTSB investigation is ongoing, with the next phase of the probe expected to address accountability.
