US Open: Williams, Djokovic push forward for 3rd round

ANKARA (AA) - Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, and Elina Svitolina advanced Thursday to the third round of the U.S. Open 2019 in New York.

The number one seed Djokovic faced Juan Ignacio Londero from Argentina in men’s singles.

Serbia’s Djokovic beat his opponent on the 56 spot in the world ranking with the sets of 6-4, 7-6, and 6-1 in men’s singles.

Last year's champion of the U.S. Open, Djokovic will face either Denis Kudla or Dusan Lajovic in the third round.

In the women's single, world no. 8 Serena Williams faced 17-year-old Catherine McNally from the U.S. in the second round.

Despite losing the first set, Williams recovered to win 5-7, 6-3, and 6-1.

Williams will play against the winner of Karolina Muchova vs Su-Wei Hsieh match in the third round.

Ashleigh Barty, the world’s second best tennis player in women’s single category, pitted against American Lauren Davis.

Australian player defeated Davis 6-2 and 7-6 to advance to the third round.

Barty will face either Shuai Peng or Maria Sakkari.

Ukranian Elina Svitolina gained a 6-4 and 6-4 victory over American Venus Williams to gain a ticket to the next round of the U.S. Open 2019.

Svitolina will face the winner of the match between Rebecca Peterson and Dayana Yastremska in the third round.
