Washington mayor calls shooting 'tragic,' offers condolences to victim’s family

WASHINGTON (AA) - Washington, DC police published footage Thursday of a deadly shooting of a Black teen that sparked protests in the nation's capital.

After Deon Kay, 18, was killed Wednesday, a group of protesters confronted police at a station.

According to videos circulated on Twitter, several protesters gathered outside Mayor Muriel Bowser's house early Thursday and called for the dismissal of Police Chief Peter Newsham because of the fatal shooting.

In the police video, an officer is seen quickly exiting a car and shouting: "Don't move, don't move," before shooting Kay.

Metropolitan Police Department said officers approached individuals in a parked vehicle and Kay exited and began to run.

Kay "brandished a firearm" and the officer discharged his weapon once, striking him in the chest, said police.

Bowser offered condolences Kay’s family and called the shooting "tragic."

"Our community is hurting, and we know that they want answers," she said.

Police killings of Black people have drawn renewed criticism and tension in the US since the May 25 killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Kenosha, Wisconsin became the latest flashpoint when police shot Jacob Blake in the back seven times late last month.

Blake remains paralyzed at a local hospital.
