US political leaders react to Istanbul terror attack

'We remain steadfast in our support for Turkey, our NATO ally and partner,' White House says

NEW YORK (AA) – Reactions from U.S. political figures poured in late Tuesday after a terror attack struck Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport that killed 36 victims and injured nearly 150.

The U.S. "condemns in the strongest possible terms today’s heinous terrorist attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport,” according to a statement issued by the White House.

"Ataturk International Airport, like Brussels Airport which was attacked earlier this year, is a symbol of international connections and the ties that bind us together," it said.

The statement extended condolences to the victims' families, wishing a speedy recovery to those injured. "We remain steadfast in our support for Turkey, our NATO ally and partner, along with all of our friends and allies around the world, as we continue to confront the threat of terrorism," it added.

The State Department said that, "sadly, this murderous attack is only the latest in a series of attacks aimed at killing and maiming innocent civilians. Such attacks will only reinforce our determination to work with the government of Turkey to counter the scourge of terrorism and support all those across the region who are working to promote peace and reconciliation."

The presidential candidates also weighed in, with presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton saying, "terrorist have struck again in the heart of one of our NATO allies -- and all Americans stand united with the people of Turkey against this campaign of hatred and violence."

In a statement issued by his campaign, presumptive Republican candidate Donald Trump said, "Our prayers are with the families of those killed and injured in Istanbul. The whole world is stunned and horrified.

"The terrorist threat has never been greater. Our enemies are brutal and ruthless and will do anything to murder those who do not bend to their will."

House Speaker Paul Ryan, along with numerous other congressmen, also condemned the attack and expressed solidarity with the Turkish people.
