US Secret Service officers fatally shoot suspect at Peruvian envoy's residence
Officers fire on suspect after tasers failed to 'take effect,' law enforcement says

WASHINGTON (AA) - Secret Service officers responding to reports of a burglary in progress at the Peruvian ambassador's residence fatally shot a suspect at the scene, law enforcement said Wednesday.
Police said Secret Service officers were called in by Ambassador Oswaldo de Rivero's family. Rivero was at the residence with his family at the time of the attempted break-in.
Washington DC Police Chief Robert Conte said officers found the suspect, who was holding a "metal stake," in the rear of the building, which had several "smashed out" windows. The officers did attempt to use tasers but they "did not take effect" on the suspect, said Conte.
"Ultimately, the officers ended up pulling their service weapons, firing shots, and this person is now deceased," he added.
The name of the suspect who was killed was not released. No one inside the residence was injured, according to Conte.
Police are investigating the fatal shooting alongside the Secret Service. No motive has yet been established.
