US State Dept. confirms 'anomalous' cyber activity on its network

'We have not yet made a public attribution,' Miller says when asked who might be behind cyber incidents disclosed by Microsoft

WASHINGTON (AA) - The US State Department said Wednesday that it detected "anomalous activity" on its network last month, and immediately notified Microsoft.

"I can say that last month the State Department detected anomalous activity," Spokesman Matthew Miller said when asked about Microsoft's statement saying that China-based hackers 25 organizations, including US government accounts.

"We did two things immediately. One, we took immediate steps to secure our systems. And two, took immediate steps to notify Microsoft of the event," he said.

"As a matter of cybersecurity policy, we do not discuss the details of our response. The incident remains under investigation. And we continuously monitor our networks and update our security procedures," he added.

When asked who might be behind the cyber incident, Miller said the US government has not made a public attribution.
