US state of Florida elects 1st-ever Gen Z member, Afro-Latino to represent Congress

HOUSTON, US (AA) - Maxwell Alejandro Frost came out of nowhere in the political world to win a seat in the US House of Representatives Tuesday night in the state of Florida, making him the first-ever member of Generation Z to represent Congress.

"WE WON!!!!" tweeted Frost, 25, after he was projected to win the race. "History was made tonight. We made history for Floridians, for Gen Z, and for everyone who believes we deserve a better future."

Frost, an Uber driver, beat Republican Calvin Wimbish, a retired US Army Green Beret who expressed hardline views on abortion and immigration.

Both were vying to replace Florida's 10th Congressional seat vacated by outgoing Rep. Val Demings, who ran for a Senate seat in the Sunshine State.

Frost, who is African American and Cuban, ran in a largely blue district, but stunned the Democratic field during the primary against some seasoned political veterans.

He took that momentum a step further to win the midterm election as the first Afro-Latino member elected to Congress by touting his long history as a progressive activist for civil rights and gun control.

In 2018, Frost worked with the American Civil Liberties Union advocating to restore voting rights to Floridians with felony convictions.

He touted progressive policies on the campaign trail, including his vision of “reimagining justice” through ending mass incarceration, demilitarizing the police and abolishing the death penalty.

"I am beyond thankful for the opportunity to represent my home in the United States Congress," said Frost.
