US stock market opens higher to kick off new week with gains

ISTANBUL (AA) – Major exchanges in the US stock market opened higher on Monday to kick off the new week with gains.

The Dow Jones added 190 points, or 0.57%, to reach 33,820 at 10.17 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 rose 36 points, or 0.93%, to 3,931.

The Nasdaq increased 158 points, or 1.5%, to 10,727 at the time.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was up 1.9% to 21.53. The 10-year US Treasury yield rose 1.5% to 3.576%.

The dollar index fell 0.7% to 103.14, while the euro added 0.95% to $1.0745 against the greenback.

Precious metals were up, with the price of gold rising 0.6% to $1,876 per ounce and silver gaining 0.3% to $23.91 an ounce.

Crude oil prices jumped more than 2%. Price of global benchmark Brent crude was up 2.9% to $80.89 per barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude price was around $76.05 – up 3.1%.
