US stock markets close Monday mixed

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major stock exchanges in the US closed mixed on Monday.

The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average fell 112 points, or 0.14%, to finish at 33,517. The S&P 500 lost 3 points, or 0.08%, to 3,892.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq, on the other hand, increased 66 points, or 0.63%, to 10,635.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 4% to 21.98. The 10-year US Treasury yield decreased 1.2% to 3.528%.

The dollar index fell 0.67% to 103.18, while the euro rose 0.85% to $1.0735 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed with the price of gold rising 0.3% to $1,871 per ounce, but silver falling 0.9% to $23.62.

Crude oil prices were in positive territory. Global benchmark Brent crude was up 1.4% to $79.69 per barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude was around $74.73 -- up 1.3%.
