US stock markets open Monday lower

ANKARA (AA) - US stock markets opened lower on Monday to start the new week in negative territory.

The Dow Jones fell 201 points, or 0.62%, to open the day at 32,082 at 9.36 a.m. EDT (1436GMT). The S&P 500 lost 22 points, or 0.55%, to 4,034.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq lost 58 points, or 0.48%, to 12,081.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, soared 4.6% to 26.75. The 10-year US Treasury yield was up 1.7% to 3.086%.

While the dollar index was down 0.1% to 108.69, the euro rose 0.45% to $1.0007 against the dollar.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold flat at $1,738 and silver falling 1% to $18.7

Oil prices were up. Global oil benchmark Brent crude was at $100.73 per barrel for a 1.7% gain, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was up 2% to $94.95.
