US stocks close lower to start June

ANKARA (AA) - Major indices on the New York Stock Exchange closed in negative territory Wednesday to make a weak start to June.

The Dow Jones was down 176 points, or 0.54%, to 32,813. The S&P 500 fell almost 31, or 0.75%, to end the day at 4,101 points.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq declined almost 87 points, or 0.72%, to close at 11,994.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was down 2% to 25.67.

The dollar index added 0.8% to 102.55 and the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 2.6% to 2.919%.

Precious metals rose with gold adding 0.5% to $1,846 and silver rising 1.3% to $21.82.

Crude prices were up slightly. Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading at $115.71 for a 0.5% gain, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $114.66.
