US stocks close mixed

ISTANBUL (AA) - US stocks closed mixed Tuesday.

The blue-chip Dow Jones industrial average rose 37 points, or 0.11%, to close at 33,241.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, fell 15 points, or 0.41%, to 3,829.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq plummeted 144 points, or 1.38%, to 10,353.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, jumped 4.4% to 21.78. The 10-year US Treasury yield increased 2.8% to 3.852%.

The dollar index fell 0.11% to 104.20, while the euro rose 0.06% to $1.0642 against the greenback.

Precious metals were up with the price of gold rising 0.8% to $1,813 per ounce and silver gaining 1.3% to $24.05.

Crude oil prices were in positive territory. Global benchmark Brent crude was up 0.5% to $84.92 per barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude was around $79.73 -- up 0.2%.
