US stocks end higher in 1st session of new year

Apple becomes first public company to hit $3 trillion market capitalization

ISTANBUL (AA) - Major US stock indexes ended higher Monday on the first trading day of the new year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 246.76 points, or 0.68%, to close at 36,585.

The S&P 500 rose 30.4 points, or 0.64%, to post an all-time high closing of 4,796.

The Nasdaq was up 187.83 points, or 1.20%, to close at 15,832.

Apple Inc. became the first ever public company to reach US$3 trillion in market value, with the stock rallying 3% during the day. It briefly hit the market cap before dropping back under the mark shortly afterwards.

Tesla’s shares also rose after the electric car company’s quarterly delivery figures beat analysts’ estimates.
