US stocks in red at opening

VIX volatility index up 3.17% while dollar index falls 0.50%

ANKARA (AA) - US stocks opened in the red Wednesday as optimism diminished concerning Russia-Ukraine peace talks.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that there was not a promising outcome with negotiations held Tuesday in Turkiye.

"So far, we cannot say that there is a very promising, turning point, there is still a lot of work to be done," he said.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 20.56 points, or 0.06%, to 35,273 at 9.30 a.m. EDT (1330GMT). The S&P 500 decreased 10.9 points, or 0.24%, to 4,620.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq slid 58.15 points, or 0.40%, to 14,561.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, rose 3.17% to 19.50 while the dollar index was down 0.50% to 97,945.

Precious metals were on the rise with gold up 0.70% to $1,925 per ounce and silver climbed 1.28% to $25.

Crude oil prices rebounded on persisting fears about more sanctions on Russia.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading at $111.2, up 3.25%, while the US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $107.8 -- a 3.4% gain.
