US stocks lower at close

ANKARA (AA) - The New York Stock Exchange closed in negative territory Tuesday to kick off a new week.

The Dow was down 223 points, or 0.67%, to close at 32,989 points. The S&P 500 fell 26, or 0.63%, to end the day at 4,132.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq was off 49 points, or 0.41%, to 12,081.

The New York Stock Exchange was closed Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, was down 1% to 26.60 despite climbing earlier to as high as 28.34.

The dollar index added 0.1% to 101.77 and the 10-year US Treasury yield rose 3.8% to 2.855%.

Precious metals were down with gold losing 1.1% to $1,836 and silver falling 2.1% to $21.53.

Crude prices reversed course and gave up earlier gains.

Global oil benchmark Brent crude was trading at $116.17 for a 1.2% loss, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was at $115.15 -- a 1.7% decrease.
