US stocks mixed at opening bell

ANKARA (AA) - US stocks opened mixed Thursday.

The Dow Jones jumped 412 points, or 1.3%, to start the fourth trading day of the week at 32,250 at 9.36 a.m. EDT (1336GMT).

The S&P 500 added 14 points, or 0.37%, to 3,843. But the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 23 points, or 0.2%, to 10,943.

The VIX volatility index, also known as the fear index, rose 0.1% to 27.31. The 10-year US Treasury yield fell 0.7% to 3.987%.

The dollar index gained 0.5% to 110.27, still around its highest in 20 years, while the euro lost 0.6% to $1.0018 against the greenback.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold down 0.2% to $1,661 but silver adding 0.3% to $19.64.

Oil prices also climbed more than 1%. Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 1.2% to $94.94 per barrel, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate was around $89.49, up 1.8%.
