US stocks open mixed

VIX index down 3% but still above critical level of 20

ANKARA (AA) - US stocks opened mixed on Tuesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 74 points, or 0.21%, to 35,209 at 9.39 a.m. EDT. The S&P 500 rose 8 points, or 0.2%, to 4,524.

The Nasdaq fell 19 points, or 0.14%, to 14,220.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, was down 3% to 24.09 but still managed to stay above the critical level of 20.

The dollar index lost 0.25% to 96.30, but the yield on 10-year US Treasury notes gained 0.3% to 1.788%.

Precious metals were on the rise with gold adding 0.33% to $1,803 per ounce and silver increasing 1.9% to $22.89.

Crude oil lost around 0.9% with Brent crude trading at $88.48 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate at $87.22.
