US Supreme Court says Trump-era immigration policy will remain in place
White House says it will comply with Court's ruling, urges Congress ‘to pass comprehensive immigration reform measures’
By Betul Yuruk
NEW YORK (AA) - The US Supreme Court said Tuesday that a Trump administration policy from 2020, called Title 42, would remain in place to prevent migrants from entering the county.
"Title 42 is a public health measure, not an immigration enforcement measure, and it should not be extended indefinitely," said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre.
"To truly fix our broken immigration system, we need Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform measures," she added
The top court's ruling came after 19 Republican attorneys general filed an emergency request to keep the policy in place.
Title 42 allows federal officials to deport undocumented migrants seeking entry into the US.
The Court temporarily extended the controversial policy in a 5-4 ruling, agreeing to hear oral arguments in February from Republican-led states.
The Biden administration said that it would comply with the order and prepare for the court's review.
