US urges ‘democratic government’ in Tunisia ahead of elections

Tunisia prepares to hold early parliamentary elections on Dec. 17

By Adel Al-Thabti
TUNIS, Tunisia (AA) – The United States on Monday underlined the importance of a "democratic government" in Tunisia as the North African country prepares for early parliamentary elections on Dec. 17.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary Christopher Le Mon and USAID’s Deputy Assistant Administrator Megan Doherty met with representatives of Tunisia’s civil society last week.
During their meeting, the US diplomats expressed US support for “a democratic and accountable government, promoting respect for fundamental freedoms, and securing prosperity for all Tunisians,” the US Embassy in Tunisia said in a statement.

Le Mon and Doherty also met with officials from the Interior and Foreign Ministries and the country’s election commission “to stress the importance of a responsive, transparent, and accountable democratic government that prioritizes the country’s future and protects human rights,” it added.
Tunisia has been in the throes of a deep political crisis that aggravated the country's economic conditions since last year, when President Kais Saied ousted the government and dissolved parliament.

While opponents see Saied’s measures as a “coup against the constitution," others view them a "correction of the course of the 2011 revolution," which overthrew then-President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
Saied, who in 2019 started a five-year presidential term, considers his measures necessary to "save the country from imminent danger."
