KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - Uzbekistan’s foreign minister on Wednesday met with the Pakistani leadership to discuss a slew of regional and international issues, focusing on the fragile Afghan peace dialogue.

Abdulaziz Kamilov, who reached Islamabad on Tuesday on a two-day visit, met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan and Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Chief of Army Staff Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa to discuss ways to bolster trade, business and security cooperation.

Underlining the historical links between the two countries, Khan said his country wishes to "deepen" bilateral cooperation, particularly, trade and regional connectivity, said a statement by the Prime Minister’s office.

Referring to the proposed Trans-Afghan railway project between Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, the premier underscored Pakistan’s "commitment to support all efforts for the earliest realization of this important connectivity project."

Pakistan, he noted, offers the "shortest route" to international seas to all Central Asian states through Karachi and Gwadar ports and "could be the gateway to landlocked Central Asia."

He also reaffirmed the resolve to facilitate Uzbekistan’s access to Pakistani ports.

Kamilov, for his part, conveyed "cordial greetings" of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and reiterated Uzbekistan’s commitment to expand bilateral cooperation with Pakistan in diverse fields.

He also handed over a letter from President Mirziyoyev, inviting Khan to participate in a Central Asia-South Asia Connectivity Conference in Tashkent in July 2021.

The prime minister thanked for the invitation and mentioned that "he was looking forward to visiting Uzbekistan."

Khan, according to the statement, reaffirmed Pakistan’s "steadfast" support to the Afghan peace process and stressed the importance of a negotiated political solution.

He expressed hope that the Afghan sides will seize this "historic opportunity to work together constructively and secure an inclusive, broad-based and comprehensive negotiated political settlement."

In the context of South Asia, he underscored that durable peace and economic development in the region hinged on peaceful resolution of long-standing unresolved disputes.

Earlier, his Pakistani counterpart Qureshi informed Kamilov of Islamabad's ongoing "mediatory" role and "positive results" to bring an end to a 19-year bloody conflict in the war-torn country.
