Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov dies
78-year-old statesman had been in intensive care for cerebral hemorrhage since last Saturday
ANKARA (AA) – Uzbekistan's president, Islam Karimov, has died, a local source told Anadolu Agency on Friday.
Earlier Friday, Uzbekistan’s government released a statement saying Karimov's health condition was “critical”.
According to the UzDaily.com news site, the government in Tashkent released a statement reading: “Dear compatriots, with a heavy heart, we inform you that in the last day, the state of our president has sharply deteriorated.”
Karimov, 78, had been in intensive care from last Saturday for a cerebral hemorrhage.
During a news briefing in Ankara, Turkey's prime minister, Binali Yildirim, offered his condolences to the Uzbek people on Karimov's death.
According to Uzbekistan’s constitution, if the president is unable to discharge his duties, his functions are carried out for a period of three months by the head of the upper house of the Uzbek parliament.
