Vietnam elects Central Committee members to run gov't

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AA) - The 13th Party National Congress elected 200 Central Committee members, consisting of 180 officials and 20 alternate members, at its eight-day consecutive session, which ended in Hanoi on Monday.

The Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong and Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who were re-elected to the Central Committee on Saturday, congratulated the newly elected representatives, according to Viet Nam News.

Vietnam is a single-party socialist republic, where the CPV secretary-general is the party leader and the head of the politburo, holding the highest position in the one-party system.

The eight-day CPV Congress convened to elect the politburo, the party secretary-general, the secretariat, and the inspection commission, besides the commission's head for a new tenure of office.

The meeting, which started on Jan. 25, was attended by 1,587 delegates representing more than 5.1 million nationwide party members.

“The 13th Party National Committee pledged to unite, to serve the country, the people, constantly cultivating and improving capacity, qualifications, political bravery, ethical qualities, following the example of the great President Ho Chi Minh," the daily quoted Trong as saying during his closing speech.

For his unprecedented third term in office, Trong was elected the secretary general of the Party Central Committee. He has been a member of the CPV since 1967.

The Communist Party of Vietnam is the founding and ruling party of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, founded by former President Ho Chi Minh in 1930.
