Virus cases, fatalities climb in Eurasia, Central Asia

Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Belarus, Tajikistan, report new cases

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan (AA) – Coronavirus cases and fatalities continued to rise across Eurasian and Central Asian countries on Thursday.

- Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan reported 1,674 more virus cases over the past 24 hours, raising the overall count to 65,188.

Recoveries increased by 1,058 to reach 39,066, while the death toll stands at 375, the Health Ministry said.

The 14-day quarantine procedures which started on July 5 continue in the country.

- Ukraine

Ukrainian officials reported 848 more cases over the past 24 hours, raising the overall count to 56,455 in the country.

Eighteen more fatalities pushed the death toll to 1,445, while recoveries climbed to 28,931 with 505 additions.

The country extended quarantine procedures until July 31 as the virus continues to spread.

- Kyrgyzstan

In Kyrgyzstan, 521 more people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the tally to 12,498, including 5,638 recoveries.

To date, 167 people have died from COVID-19 in the country.

- Armenia

Cases increased to 33,559 in the Caucasian country of Armenia, as 554 more people contracted COVID-19 over the past day, according to Health Ministry data.

Fifteen more people died of the virus, raising the toll to 607.

Over 141,000 tests have been performed in the country, nearly 22,000 patients have recovered and the treatment of 10,832 continues.

- Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan, 321 more people contracted the virus, raising the tally to 14,787.

Three more fatalities brought the toll to 72, while 312 more recoveries over the past 24 hours raised the total to 8,615.

The Health Ministry said 5,280 people were currently receiving treatment.

Medical staff have conducted 1.2 million coronavirus tests, while 80,000 people remain under surveillance.

- Georgia

Two people contracted COVID-19 in Georgia, bringing the overall count to 1,037. 15 virus patients have died, while 883 have recovered so far.

Over 5,600 people have been quarantined.

- Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan reported 561 fresh cases, bringing the tally to 17,256. The death toll reached 334 and 17,256 people have so far recovered from the disease.

More than 600,000 tests have so far been conducted in the country. A total of 8,575 are still receiving medical treatment.

- Moldova

Moldova reported 224 cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total to 20,264.

Seven more people died of COVID-19 in the country, raising the death toll to 666. A total of 13,640 people have recovered.

- Belarus

In Belarus, another 180 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus, bringing the total to 65,623. The number of recoveries reached 56,915 and the death toll hit 485.

Over 1.1 million tests have so far been conducted in the country.

- Tajikistan

At least 46 more cases in Tajikistan pushed the overall count to 6,741, including 5,431 recoveries and 56 fatalities.

- Worldwide

Since first appearing in China last December, the novel coronavirus has spread to at least 188 countries and regions. The US, Brazil, and Russia are currently the countries hardest hit in the world.

The pandemic has killed nearly 585,000 people worldwide, with more than 13.58 million confirmed cases and over 7.6 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
