Virus claims 6 more lives in Tunisia, 3 in Bahrain

Coronavirus-linked death toll rises to 93 and 196 respectively

ISTANBUL (AA) – Tunisia confirmed on Sunday six new coronavirus-related fatalities, while Bahrain registered three.

The Tunisian Health Ministry said it recorded 234 additional infections over the past 24 hours, pushing the country’s tally to 4,776 cases, including 93 deaths, and 1,701 recoveries.

The North African country managed to contain its outbreak by imposing restrictions in March, but cases have been rising since it reopened its borders on June 27.

In Bahrain, the Health Ministry registered 1,338 new cases and 632 recoveries.

The Gulf state’s caseload has risen to 54,771, including 196 deaths, and 50,645 recoveries.

Bahrain, like other Gulf countries, has, in recent weeks, relaxed several virus restrictions. Students are due to begin the new school year on Sept. 16.

Since originating in China last December, the virus has claimed nearly 880,000 lives in 188 countries and regions, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Nearly 26.9 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries at 17.97 million.

The US, Brazil, and India, whose virus cases crossed 4 million on Saturday, are currently the worst-hit countries.
