Water levels at Zambia's Victoria Falls improve

Falls, among world's 7 natural wonders, aided by increased rainfall

By James Kunda

LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) - Water levels at Zambia's Victoria Falls have significantly increased owing to the prevailing good rainfall in the southern African nation.

Acting Victoria Falls World Heritage Site Manager Fridah Munkata attributed the increasing water levels to the heavy rains that have been recorded of late.

"We continue encouraging local and international tourists to visit the falls, which are one of the world's seven natural wonders," Munkata told reporters Monday on the sidelines of a tree planting exercise at the site.

The falls, billed as the largest curtain of falling water in the world, are shared between Zambia and Zimbabwe and attract around 400,000 tourists annually.

Climate change, however, remains a threat to their splendor as dry spells often only leave a shelf of rocks on display.
