Wawrinka barely beats Seppi in Australian Open battle

2014 champ Wawrinka topples Seppi 3-2 in Australian Open men's singles 2nd round match lasted for 3 hours, 38 minutes

ANKARA (AA) - The 2014 Australian Open winner in men's, Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland hardly beat Italy's Andreas Seppi 3-2 on Thursday to advance to the third round.

Ranked 85th in the world standings, Seppi won the first set 6-4 at Margaret Court Arena.

But Wawrinka came from the 1-0 deficit against him, winning the second and third sets by 7-5 and 6-3 respectively.

Seppi managed to cling on the game as the Italian player won the fourth set 6-3 to make the score 2-2.

So the fifth set had to decide the winner of the game, which lasted for 3 hours and 38 minutes.

World no. 15, Wawrinka won the final set 6-4 to be Thursday's victor.

So the 34-year-old Wawrinka bagged the third round ticket in the 2020 Australian Open.

Wawrinka will meet American player John Isner in the tournament's third round.

Separately, top seed in men's category, Rafael Nadal of Spain won against Argentine player Federico Delbonis 3-0 at Rod Laver Arena.

Nadal earned the flawless victory against Delbonis, winning the three sets by 6-3, 7-6 and 6-1 respectively.

The 33-year-old star from Spain advanced to the third round, where he will face his fellow citizen Pablo Carreno Busta.

The 108th edition of the Australian Open will run from Jan. 20 through Feb. 2.
