What does recycling earn us?

ISTANBUL (AA) - As the world commemorates World Environment Day on Monday, the importance of recycling becomes increasingly evident.

Recycling not only helps protect our environment but also brings numerous benefits to society.

The UN designated June 5 as World Environment Day with the decision taken by the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm to raise awareness about environmental issues.

According to Türkiye's zerowaste.gov.tr, recycling 31 million tons of waste per year yields significant gains in various areas.

Firstly, recycling 31 million tons of waste annually is equivalent to saving 42 million trees.

Furthermore, recycling plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By recycling this amount of waste, nearly 585 million kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions are avoided, contributing to the fight against climate change and global warming.

Water conservation is another vital outcome of recycling efforts. Recycling 31 million tons of waste per year leads to a reduction of approximately 69 million cubic meters of water usage.

In addition to these environmental benefits, recycling also results in significant energy savings. Recycling 31 million tons of waste annually leads to a lower energy consumption of approximately 20 billion kilowatt-hours.

Recycling also provides an economic advantage. The annual value added through recycling is estimated to be around 13 billion Turkish liras (over $611 million).
