BENGHAZI, Libya (AA) – The World Health Organization (WHO) has sent medical supplies to eastern Libya’s al-Bayda city as the country’s healthcare system is on the verge of collapse.
WHO spokesman Ahmed al-Aqili said that the supplies arrived in al-Bayda on Monday.
“The medical supplies will be enough for treating some 50,000 people,” he said.
Libya’s healthcare system has been on the verge of collapse as most hospitals have been closed due to the ongoing chaos in the war-torn country.
Libya has been locked in a state of violence and turmoil since 2011, when a bloody popular uprising ended with the ouster and death of longtime strongman Muammar Gaddafi.
Since then, the country’s stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government -- one in Tobruk and another in capital Tripoli -- each of which boasts its own military capacity and legislative assembly.
