JOHANNESBURG (AA) - The widow of an anti-apartheid activist killed in prison 50 years ago has died a half-century later.

Galiema Haron, the widow of Imam Haron, died in CapeTown, age 93.

"We are saddened to hear of the passing of the late Imam Haron's wife, Galiema Haron," South African Muslim group Awqafsa said on Twitter.

“We salute her for her enduring spirit of raising her children upon Imam Haron's untimely demise.”

Galiema, who died Sunday morning, was laid to rest in the afternoon at the Mowbry Muslim Cemetery where her late husband was buried in 1969.

This month South Africa declared the imam's gravesite a provincial heritage site in recognition of his activism against apartheid.

Imam Haron was a South African Muslim cleric and anti-apartheid activist who was killed by operatives of the apartheid regime's security branch for his opposition to oppressive white minority rule.

South Africans on Sunday took to social media to express their condolences to the Haron family for the loss of Galiema, praying that God grant her paradise and strength to the family.
