WASHINGTON (AA) - The US states of Wisconsin and North Carolina are banning Chinese-owned popular video-sharing app TikTok from government devices, their governors announced on Thursday.

“I just signed an executive order banning TikTok and other potential cybersecurity-threatening technologies on state-issued devices,” Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers wrote on Twitter.

“Defending our state's technology and cybersecurity infrastructure and protecting digital privacy will continue to be a top priority,” he added.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said in a statement that the aim was to “protect state information technology from foreign countries that have actively participated in cyberattacks against the United States.”

“Protecting North Carolina from cyber threats is vital to ensuring the safety, security, privacy, and success of our state and its people,” Cooper said.

Wisconsin and North Carolina have joined at least 22 other states banning the popular video app from official devices.

US President Joe Biden last month signed into law a spending bill, which included a TikTok ban on federal employees using the video app in government devices.
