Woman thrown from car as latest rape jolts India

Gang kidnaps woman, attacks her over several hours while driving across state lines

NEW DELHI (AA) - A woman in the northern state of Haryana was gang-raped and thrown from a car, police said Tuesday, in the latest incident of sexual violence to shock India.

The woman, in her 30s, was grabbed off the street in Sohna, a city around 40 kilometers (25 miles) southwest of New Delhi, at around 8.00 p.m. local time (1430GMT) on Monday, Senior Superintendent Love Kumar said.

She was raped by three men in a moving car over a period of several hours before being dumped unconscious in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, around 50 km (30 miles) from where she was abducted.

The attack is the latest to horrify Indians following worldwide outrage over the gang-rape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student on a bus in Delhi in December 2012.

At the weekend, a 14-year-old girl was raped by at least six males and thrown from a train in Kiul, Bihar state.

Last month, a nine-month-old baby died in Haryana state when she was thrown from a moving auto-rickshaw by her mother’s rapists.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 34,651 rapes were reported across India in 2015. Experts agree that figure is a tiny fraction of the number of attacks due to the social stigma attached to rape victims.

Although India has tightened its rape laws in recent years, the changes seem to have done little to halt the rising number of sex attacks on women and girls.
