World Bank lifts some sanctions against Sudan

Anti-poverty programs will resume after they were suspended due to coup

By Mohammed Amin

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AA) - The World Bank has removed some sanctions on Sudan that it imposed after the army removed the civilian government, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

The ministry confirmed its embassy in Washington was notified the bank will resume support for anti-government programs.

“Our embassy in Washington declared that Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim has been notified that the World Bank will resume its support to the anti-poverty programs in Sudan such as the Family Support Program (Thamarat) and the COVID-19 vaccination,” it said.

It also said the move would be offered through the monitoring of the World Food Program or another third party.

The World Bank, International Monetary Fund and other international institutions suspended funds to support the transition in Sudan after the Oct. 25, 2021, military coup that ousted the civilian government headed by Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok.
